General Information Professional Certificate in Medical Technology

 

The Mission of the program is to prepare professionals in the health field who serve the needs of today's Puerto Rico. Among the objectives of the program are the following:

  1. Possess the minimum required knowledge of fundamental concepts and technical skills of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, necessary to perform adequately
    in the health industry.
  2. Perform successfully as a Medical Technologist or scientist in Clinical Laboratory 
Sciences.
  3. Demonstrate and apply moral and ethical principles in dealing with the patient, 
with their peers, and with the community.
  4. Possess the necessary skills to develop additional competencies in the 
technological advances required for professional growth.

The postgraduate Professional Certificate in Medical Technology (code 135) is an option for those students who have already completed a bachelor's degree at an accredited higher education institution and are interested in studying Medical Technology.

In approximately twelve consecutive months you will complete the theoretical and practical courses in Medical Technology. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to take the revalidation exams offered by the PR Medical Technologist Examining Board, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA). Tuition for twelve consecutive months is $10,442. The costs of the textbook, medical plan, lab coats, and general University fees are not included in the cost of the same.

Advantages of the Professional Certificate in Medical Technology

1. In addition to having a high school degree, you have a postgraduate certificate.
2. It gives you the option of studying Medical Technology, even if you already have 
a bachelor's degree in another area.
3. Because it is a postgraduate certificate, you can request a graduate student loan, 
a maximum loan amount greater than in high school.
4. With the knowledge acquired in Medical Technology, in addition to the clinical laboratory, you could seek employment: in the pharmaceutical industry, in research laboratories, forensic laboratories, other laboratories, science educator, clinical laboratory administrator, laboratory inspector, medical products propagandist.

Requirements to request admission to the Certificate in Medical Technology

  1. At the time of Admission, have passed the following courses, some of which require the approval of other courses:
    1. Microbiology
    2. Immunology
    3. 
General or Human Physiology
    4. 
General Physics I and II
    5. Precalculus I and II
    6. Organic Chemistry I and II
    7. Analytic Chemistry
    8. Biochemistry or Cellular and Molecular Biology
  2. Possess a minimum general and science average of 2.5 in university courses.
  3. Complete the application for admission to the Program and present an official 
copy of the academic record(s) from the university(s) of origin.
  4. Submit three (3) letters of recommendation.
